From the WWE ring to the theaters, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson breaks barriers you never thought he could. He uses the acting skills he learned as a WWE wrestler to explore the crooks and crannies of Hollywood through interesting movies and TV shows.
He’s doing more than building his muscles in his two decades in the industry. Here are some of his best movies.
1. Moana (2016)
Director: John Musker and Ron Clements
Role: Maui
“Moana” is a well-loved animated movie that showcases the Polynesian culture. In the film, Dwayne Johnson voices Maui, the shapeshifting demigod. The Rock’s deep voice is perfect for Maui, especially his deep yet adorable singing voice in some of the movie’s musical parts. The song “You’re Welcome” is catchy and fits his tone.
2. Fighting With My Family (2019)
Director: Stephen Merchant
Role: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Himself)
The Rock portrays himself in the movie “Fighting with My Family.” He encounters two avid fans and amateur wrestlers who are excited to talk to him. The scene is hilarious as he tries to be patient and keep his frustrations at bay when the two keep him from leaving. He also appears several times throughout the film for comedic relief.
3. Furious 7 (2015)
Director: James Wan
Role: Luke Hobbs
In ”Furious 7,” Dwayne Johnson continues his role as Luke Hobbs, an ally to Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). After Shaw’s downfall, everyone moved forward in their everyday lives. While the plot seems mundane, dramatic plots are added to the film, sprucing up the storyline.
4. The Other Guys (2010)
Director: Adam McKay
Role: Christopher Danson
“The Other Guys” narrates funny tales about police officers. Along with P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson), Christopher Danson as Dwayne Johnson is an energetic police officer with quirky behavior. They are the supporting agents for NYPD bigwigs Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg). At the movie’s beginning, they hilariously jump off the building, showing how “extra” they can be.
5. Fast Five (2011)
Director: Justin Lin
Role: Luke Hobbs
“Fast Five” is Dwayne Johnson’s first appearance as Luke Hobbs, a bounty hunter out for Dominic Toretto’s blood. The concept of a big chunk of a man chasing after Dom sounds thrilling and exciting. This movie is where The Rock’s regular appearance starts in the franchise and lasts four movies.
6. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Director: Jake Kasdan
Role: Dr. Smolder Bravestone
Dwayne Johnson’s Dr. Smolder Bravestone epitomizes confidence, but the twist? There’s an insecure teen trapped inside that muscular shell. Johnson perfectly captures this hilarious contradiction, making “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” even funnier. His chemistry with Kevin Hart, who plays Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, is pure gold.
7. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Director: Jake Kasdan
Role: Dr. Smolder Bravestone
In the sequel “Jumanji: The Next Level,” The Rock returns as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, but instead of a teenager playing him, he’s now an old grandpa. It adds a comedic element that will make you imagine your grandparents playing video games. Dwayne acts well as a clueless old man in the body of the hunky hero.
8. Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
Director: Justin Lin
Role: Luke Hobbs
In “Fast & Furious 6,” Hobbs joins Dom in a temporary truce to take down Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) and his crew. Dwayne Johnson’s addition to the family adds another layer of action and humor. After they put down the antagonist, they shake hands and go their separate ways.
9. Central Intelligence (2016)
Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Role: Bob Stone
“Central Intelligence” narrates the unusual friendship of school heartthrob Calvin Joyner (Kevin Hart) and loner Bob Stone (Dwayne Johnson). They meet up years after graduation, with Stone looking fit while Joyner struggles with his messy life.
The Rock’s portrayal of a fan who looks up to Hart’s character is hilarious. The entire movie hinges on the chemistry between these two actors.
10. The Rundown (2003)
Director: Peter Berg
Role: Beck
Beck is the main character in “The Rundown,” which looks like an Indiana Jones film. Dwayne Johnson’s Beck is a no-nonsense bounty hunter who accepts jobs without further questions. He gets a job hunting down a person in Mexico, leading him to a different adventure south of the border.
11. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
Director: David Leitch
Role: Luke Hobbs
“Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” veers away from the main plotline of the franchise. While Dwayne Johnson still portrays Luke Hobbs, this Fast and Furious spin-off hinges on the compatibility between Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw and The Rock. The movie features more comedic scenes than other films in the franchise but is still full of action-packed sequences.
12. The Fate of the Furious (2017)
Director: F. Gary Gray
Role: Luke Hobbs
Hobbs’ final appearance in Fast & Furious’ main storyline is in “The Fate of the Furious.” The cast’s chemistry continues to fuel the franchise, and this film is no different. Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs experiences an outlaw life by going on a mission off-the-books. In this film, he strays away from his strict law enforcement life.
13. Jungle Cruise (2021)
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra
Role: Frank “Skipper” Wolff
“Jungle Cruise” tells a fun and adventurous story that will make you feel like you’re on a fun Disney ride. Dwayne Johnson plays Frank Wolff, a steamboat skipper who travels with Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) to find the mythical tree. The Rock continues his roles in family-friendly movies, adding this film to his collection.
14. Hercules (2014)
Director: Brett Ratner
Role: Hercules
Dwayne Johnson plays the demigod Hercules, fitting for his physical stature. The film showcases The Rock in a loincloth, displaying his strong physique. His appearance matches well with what you may imagine the son of Zeus will look like. He perfectly delivers the look of a half-god and half-human with massive strength.
